AFC CUP: Persipura 4 - 1 East Bengal

Jakarta: Persipura Jayapura produced a dominant performance to claim three points from their AFC Cup Group H clash with East Bengal at Gelora Bung Karno.

Titus Bonai, Boaz Salossa, Stevie Bonsapia and Lukas Mandowen got the goals as Persipura made light work of their opponents, who grabbed a consolation through Tolgay Ozbey.

In truth, though, it could have been more as the Indonesian side dominated possession but failed to make the most of their chances.

Heavy rain caused kick-off to be delayed for an hour and meant when the match did get under way, there were puddles all over the pitch.

But Persipura adapted well to the conditions and were immediately on the front foot with attacking duo Boaz and Bonai causing problems for East Bengal from the start.

A goal seemed inevitable and it came in the 16th minute through speedy striker Bonai, who tapped in after keeper Sandip Nandy had fumbled Boaz’s cross.

And their second came just three minutes later when Boaz dribbled into the left side of penalty box and hammered the ball diagonally past the East Bengal custodian.

East Bengal pulled a goal back in the 21st minute after Australian striker Ozbey took advantage of a scramble in the Persipura box to score.

That was how it stayed until half-time with Boaz, Bonai and Zah Rahan all wasting decent chances in the run-up to the break which could have put the game to bed.

It was more of the same after the restart as the ball broke from the penalty area to Boaz and his thunderous shot flew over the bar.

Ian Kabes also went close when his free-kick was saved by Sandip.

Bonsapia finally extended Persipura’s lead in the 63rd minute when he dribbled past a defender before firing a shot that was deflected twice before going into the net.

Mandowen rounded off the scoring for Persipura with a volley in stoppage time.

Boaz once again danced his way past a couple of East Bengal defenders before delivering the cross to Mandowen, who made no mistake.

The victory put Persipura top of Group H with four points alongside Chonburi, while East Bengal lie bottom with one point from two games.
