Bill Kovach and Tom Rosentiel, two senior U.S. journalists, along with Committee of Concerned Journalist (CCJ) after doing extensive research on what actually needs to be done by reporters, finally managed to make a book called "The Elements of Journalism". This book states that the primary purpose of journalism is to provide accurate and reliable information to community members for the information they can build a free society. Committee of Cornerned Journalist conclude that there are at least nine core principles of journalism that should be developed. Nine Elements of Journalism Bill Kovach presented the book and Tom Rosentiel namely:
1. Primary obligation of journalism in the search for truth,
2. Primary loyalty to the citizen journalism,
3. The essence of journalism discipline of verification,
4. Journalists must maintain independence from the object coverage,
5. Journalists should make itself into an independent monitoring of power,
6. Journalists must provide a forum for the public to critique each other and find kompromi
7. Journalists should strive to make important things interesting and relevan
8. Journalists should make the news comprehensive and proportional
9. Journalists should be allowed to hear their personal conscience.
The first obligation of journalism is the truth. The first loyalty is to citizens journalism community. The essence of journalism is a discipline to do the verification. The journalists should have the freedom of the sources they cover. Journalists have a duty as independent monitors of power. Journalism must provide a forum for critical and public comment. Journalism should strive to make the important interesting and relevant. Journalists should keep the news comprehensive and proportional. The reporter has the primary obligation of conscience. Pope John Paul II, as quoted Luwi Ishwara, said: "With a vast and direct influence on public opinion, journalism can not be guided only by economic forces, profit, and special interests. Journalism should be infused as a sacred duty, carried out with the awareness that a very powerful means of communication have been entrusted to you for the good of the people. "
