Journalism has an important role in public life. Various opinions about the role of journalism we can get from various expert opinions. Opinions Bernard C. Cohen in "Advanced Newsgathering" by Bryce T. McIntyre mentioned some journalistic roles including the following:
1.Reporting (Informer) Journalism in the life of the community act as eyes and ears of the community,
reported the events that occur with neutral and unbiased.
2.The interpreter (interpreter) Events that occur require interpretation or meaning, so the task of journalism is
to explain its meaning, by analyzing news in news reporting or news commentary in the editorial.
3.Representatives from the public (representatives of the public) Journalism should be viewed as a public
representative. Therefore, the news is a product of journalism should be a reflection of the people's voice.
4.Role of guard (watchdog) Journalism also act as "watchdogs" who criticize the policy / government actions
that harm the community. This is where journalism defend the public interest, and oppressed communities.
5.Policy makers and advokasi.Pembelaan against the public interest is a "call" journalism. Therefore, the
journalistic product made by a journalist should always be honed sharpness and sensitivity analysis of
conscience to be able to see social problems that occur, so that journalism can be weighted, not from
writing. The principle of truth and justice are the two main principles that must be on hold as a journalist.
